According to the Mayo Clinic, a healthy person needs to have their eyes checked by an ophthalmologist every one or two years until they are 60 or have health problems like diabetes. At that point, they need an eye exam every year. Bradley J. Phillips, M.D, L.L.C. in Somerset, NJ would like to look at how to prepare for your eye exam.

Schedule Plenty of Time

The average time of an eye exam is about one hour. If you need glasses or contact lenses, then it could take longer.

What to Bring

If this is your first visit with an ophthalmologist, you need to fill out a few forms about your medical history. Bring a list of medications you take, including vitamins. Ask your family beforehand if anyone has eye problems like glaucoma, which can run in families. Our eye doctor will need to know if you have medical conditions like high blood pressure, sickle cell anemia, or diabetes.

Arrange for Another Person to Drive You

Eye drops need to be used to dilate the eye. The doctor needs to see the back of your eyes. Eye exams are used to check for many things including the first signs of cataracts and glaucoma, two of the major causes of blindness. If you have never had eye drops before, arrange for another person to drive you, because the drops will affect your vision temporarily. Eye exams with eye drops often do not bother people, but it is a good idea to be safe.

Bring Sunglasses

Having your eyes dilated makes them very sensitive to light. Your pupils will take about a half-hour to fully dilate, then they can stay dilated up to 24 hours. Sunglasses make this period more comfortable.

Headaches and Migraines

Dilating the pupils can trigger headaches or migraines in some people prone to these conditions. You may want to take medication before the eye exam to ease the pain.
